When you open the Waves section in Fishing Points, you'll see a forecast that includes:
- Wave height (in your preferred units)
- Wave period (time between successive waves)
- Wave direction (direction where waves are coming from)
- Separate data for overall waves, swell, and wind waves
This information helps you understand sea conditions at your fishing location.
To switch between these views:
- Open Waves in your menu
- Toggle between: Waves

and Wind waves
What wave measurements tell you
Understanding the key wave measurements helps you make better decisions:
- Wave height: The vertical distance from wave trough to crest, indicating how large the waves are
- Wave period: The time between successive wave crests (longer periods generally mean smoother water)
- Wave direction: Shown as compass direction, indicating where waves are coming from
Reading wave period values
The app shows wave period measurements (in seconds), which tell you:
- Longer periods (8+ seconds): Typically associated with swells; more comfortable for boating
- Shorter periods (under 5 seconds): Usually indicate wind waves; choppier conditions
In the app, you'll notice separate forecasts for different wave types:
- Swells
are long, smooth waves that have travelled from distant areas. They're usually created by storms or strong winds far away from your location. Swells move in consistent patterns with longer periods between wave crests.
- Wind waves
are choppy, irregular waves created by local wind conditions. They form directly where the wind is blowing across the water's surface. Wind waves typically have shorter periods between crests.
Why wave types matter for fishing
Different wave types affect your fishing in various ways:
- Swells
are generally more predictable and can help with boat positioning. Long-period swells might be easier to fish in despite their height. They can also indicate good fishing along depth changes where they interact with the bottom.
- Wind waves
make for rougher, less comfortable fishing conditions. They create more water disturbance and can make boat handling and casting more difficult. However, the choppy surface can reduce visibility underwater, sometimes making fish less wary.
