Moon phases have a significant influence on fish behavior and feeding patterns. Many anglers like to check the solunar calendars before fishing as an additional source of information - find below how to access this information in the app.
Why moon phases matter for fishing
Different moon phases create varying fishing conditions:
- Full moon: Generally creates stronger tides and more light for night fishing, often increases fish activity, especially at night
- New moon: Often produces good daytime fishing with less night visibility
- Quarter moons: Typically generate moderate tidal movement, trigger transitional periods that can trigger fishing
Many experienced anglers focus on the days immediately before and after full and new moons, as these often provide excellent fishing opportunities.
How to access the Solunar calendar
Finding the lunar calendar in Fishing Points is simple:
- Open Solunar in your menu
- Tap the calendar button in your bottom-right corner
- Swipe to view past, present, and future moon phases
While the free version of Fishing Points gives you access to same day and past days moon positions, the Premium plan displays a lunar calendar for the upcoming 3 months making it great tool for fishing planning.
Understanding moon phases in the calendar
The lunar calendar shows the progression of moon phases:
- New moon: Shown as dotted empty circle
- First quarter: Half circle illuminated on right side
- Full moon: Blue-colored full circle
- Last quarter: Half circle illuminated on left side
Each calendar day also displays the percentage of moon illumination, helping you track the gradual changes between major phases.
Understanding sunrise and sunset information
The Solunar screen displays sun movement throughout the day:
- A visual animation shows the sun's position based on the time of day
- The 24-hour timeline is divided between day and night
- Dawn and dusk transition periods are clearly marked
- Precise times are displayed for: Dawn start, Sunrise, Solar noon, Sunset, Dusk end
This information helps you plan fishing during prime light transition periods when many fish are actively feeding.
Combining solunar data with other factors
For the most complete fishing forecast, use the lunar calendar together with:
- Tide information (strongest around new and full moons)
- Sunrise/sunset times (often better during moon phase transitions)
- Weather forecasts (clear nights during full moons can be excellent)
