Fish ID lets you identify a fish species directly from a photo, using your camera or an image from your gallery. This article explains how to scan a fish, read your results, and save an identified fish as a Catch.
How to access Fish ID
- Tap the "+" button in the bottom-right of the main map screen
- Tap "Identify fish" at the top of the menu
How to scan a fish
You can identify a fish either by taking a photo or choosing one from your gallery:
- Taking a photo: Position the fish inside the frame ("Place fish in focus") > Tap the blue capture button
- Using a photo from your gallery: Tap the gallery icon in the bottom-left > Select a photo of your fish
Once a photo is taken or selected, Fish ID automatically detects the fish and outlines it in orange. If more than one fish appears in the photo, tap the one you want identified.
Tap "Identify fish" to continue, or "Retake" to take a new photo.
⚠️ Note: Fish ID needs an internet connection to work. For the best results, make sure the fish is clearly visible, well-lit, and stands out from the background.
How to view your results
After you tap "Identify fish," Fish ID analyzes the photo and shows the likely matches. Your primary match is highlighted with a blue outline. You can tap any card to explore other matches and view their full profiles below.
How to read fish details
For the selected result, Fish ID shows the following details (if data is available in our database):
- Fish name and its Latin (scientific) name
- Tags for water type and conservation status, if available (e.g. "Freshwater", "Least concern")
- Fish info and Regulations tabs (see Understanding bag & size limits and Fishing seasons and incorrect Regulations for more information)
⚠️ Note: The Species & Regulations feature is currently available only in selected U.S. states and Australian territories. See How to access the Species & Regulations feature? for the full list of supported regions.
How to save your Catch
Tap "Save as catch" to save your result as a Catch. This opens the Catch screen and automatically fills in the image, species name, capture time, and location — just add any extra details and save.
