Difference between state & federal regulations?
State regulations apply to waters managed by individual U.S. states, usually including rivers, lakes, and coastal areas up to 3 nautical miles offshore.
Federal regulations apply to waters managed by the U.S. government, typically starting 3 nautical miles offshore and extending out to 200 nautical miles (also called federal or “offshore” waters).
Some species are regulated by both because they move between state and federal waters or are important to both. To protect them consistently, both agencies may set rules.
