This article explains what fishing seasons are, why they matter, where we get our regulation data from, and what to do if you spot incorrect information.
What is the season in fishing?
A fishing season is a period during which it is legal and optimal to catch a specific type of fish in a certain area.
Seasons are set by local authorities to:
- Protect fish during spawning or migration
- Support population recovery
- Ensure sustainable fishing practices
Fishing outside of the open season is typically prohibited.
💡 Tip: Below each season in the app, you may also find details like:
- Legal fishing gear
- Exceptions (e.g., different seasons by gender, waterway, or method)
- Additional restrictions and special rules
Where does the regulation data come from?
All regulation data in the app—including seasons, bag limits, size limits, and more—is sourced directly from official government authorities, such as Fish and Wildlife departments, Departments of Primary Industries, and other regional regulatory bodies.
